War Footing Let's Play Guide: Master the Minister of Defense Role in 2026

A complete War Footing let's play guide: scenario picks, procurement priorities, weekly turn strategy, and tips for surviving your first invasion.

What is War Footing?

War Footing is a turn-based strategy game from developer and publisher Strategist's Den Games in which you serve as a nation's Minister of Defense during an alternate-history Cold War crisis. Each turn represents one week, and you control the budget, the procurement contracts, the political relationships, and the force structure. The army that meets the invasion is the army you built before the first shot was fired.

Across eight scenarios you source equipment from foreign suppliers or your own domestic industry, raise units from company to brigade level from a catalog of more than 180 equipment types, and protect the political stability that keeps your funding line open. Battles resolve at the operational level, sector by sector and week by week, so readiness, doctrine fit, equipment quality, and deployment decide the outcome long before contact.

Explore the War Footing Wiki

Eight guide modules cover the whole mobilization: the beginner path, weekly economy management, equipment procurement, nations and blocs, combat doctrine, scenarios, diplomacy, and post-launch updates.

War Footing Beginner Guide

Learn the core gameplay loop, turn-based military planning, and how to prepare your nation for an invasion. Cover essential first steps, including budget management, equipment procurement, unit training, and force deployment.

1Read the briefing first: every scenario ships with different starting conditions, resource constraints, and an enemy configuration.
2Audit the money before you spend it: available funds, recurring income, and every payment you already owe.
3Lock in foundational procurement early, while availability is still favorable and prices have not moved.
4Raise and train core formations so you field a combined-arms backbone instead of one expensive unit stack.
5Stabilize domestic politics, because political stability is what keeps the funding line open.
6Spend the final turns filling gaps and finalizing deployment before the invasion begins.

War Footing Economy Guide

Explain how to manage national income, allocate funds between procurement, industrial investment, domestic stability, and diplomacy, and plan purchases over multiple turns. Help players balance immediate military needs with long-term economic development.

IncomeRecurring income pays the every-turn readiness, training, and stability bills, so it has to stay above your obligations.
CapitalCapital funding belongs to high-impact purchases and industrial expansion, never to routine operations.
ReserveThe emergency reserve absorbs delayed income and sudden crises, so grow it before tensions rise, not during.
StabilityStability spending is a defensive investment: cut it and the funding stream that pays for your army can strangle itself.

War Footing Equipment Guide

Explore the game's military equipment categories, including infantry weapons, tanks, artillery, aircraft, and air defense systems. Compare equipment costs, combat capabilities, availability, and strategic trade-offs to help players make informed procurement decisions.

S Tier

Infantry and armor first: infantry holds ground and forms the structure of every larger formation, while armor supplies breakthrough and holding power.

A Tier

Air defense next: limited systems belong around your most important formations and infrastructure instead of being spread thin.

B Tier

Artillery follows: indirect fire shapes engagements, but it cannot defend itself once it is overrun.

C Tier

Aircraft last: reach and striking power fade quickly without maintenance, crews, and sustained readiness.

War Footing Nations Guide

Introduce the playable nations and explain how their available units, industrial capabilities, and starting conditions affect military planning. Provide nation-specific preparation advice based on official game information and developer updates.

BlocsCold War alignments decide who will sell to you and how quickly a foreign order can actually be delivered.
IndustryDomestic production lines ramp up slowly but improve cost and self-sufficiency as they scale.
StandingYour starting treasury, industrial base, and neighbor determine which defense plan is even possible.
DoctrineMatch the force you build to the doctrine and the threat your nation actually faces.

War Footing Combat Strategy Guide

Explain operational combat, sector defense, unit readiness, doctrine compatibility, and deployment decisions. Show how to build balanced forces and coordinate different unit types to improve battlefield effectiveness.

1Assign training weeks to the formations you will actually deploy, because readiness accumulates over turns.
2Match doctrine to mission and re-role or re-equip a formation rather than hoping it adapts in the field.
3Modernize key formations first so equipment quality can beat what is genuinely coming at you.
4Deploy defensively near likely approaches and keep mobile forces back as reinforcement.
5Cover every sector with a formation that is trained and fully equipped, not paper strength.
6Recheck stability and the budget after the deployment order, because a war economy has to survive the war.

War Footing Scenario Guide

Introduce the game's eight scenarios and explain how different starting conditions, resource limitations, and enemy configurations influence the player's strategy. Provide preparation checklists and scenario-specific recommendations as verified details become available.

BriefingEight scenarios ship with distinct starting conditions, resource constraints, and enemy configurations.
OpeningThe first turns set the rhythm: audit income, then commit to foundational procurement.
MidgameRaise and train the combined-arms backbone while political stability still holds.
EndgameFinal turns are for filling gaps and finalizing deployment, since changes after the invasion barely matter.

War Footing Diplomacy Guide

Explain how diplomatic relationships, foreign suppliers, envoys, and political stability influence national defense planning. Help players understand the trade-offs between international procurement, diplomatic investment, and maintaining domestic support.

EnvoysDiplomacy is worth the spend when extra preparation time is worth more than another purchase.
TreatiesHonor diplomatic obligations early, while the political price of doing so is lowest.
UnrestDomestic unrest fractures a war economy faster than any enemy offensive can.
DealsForeign deals buy speed and availability, while domestic industry buys control over your own supply.
